Manchester United head coach says he will not quit, but knows there is only so much poor performance the club can take
Manchester United will keep faith with Amorim through the summer and into next season, but his place will come under threat if performances fail to improve, the Portuguese has said.
On Sunday after the loss to West Ham, which took United to 16th place in the league, the head coach said that his position would be given to someone else if there is no upturn in form next season. On Wednesday, ahead of the club’s penultimate Premier League match of the season, and the last before the all-important Europa Final on 21 May, Amorim doubled down on his comments about not having a future at the club if there is no improvement in their fortunes.
“Since I arrived here, I have always been talking about the standards,” he said. “I have a clear idea what to do. I understand the problems of the team, so I am far from quitting.
“What I am saying is, we need to perform in the future and this season. If not, they will change us, that is a normal thing. That was my feeling and is still my feeling today.
“I’m the manager of this big club. Even if it’s a pre-season match, we need to win.”
United have lost 17 games out of 36 so far this season, their worst since the 1973/74 campaign. Current expectations are that the club will engage in a massive rebuild to provide Amorim with the players he needs to implement his system.
Some of United’s targets for next summer are Wolves forward Matheus Cunha and Ipswich striker Liam Delap. Amorim has already signed one player: Lecce wingback Patrick Dorgu, brought in during the January transfer window.
