Club must focus on fixing deeper issues, according to Manchester United manager
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has downplayed the significance of winning the Europa League, saying that it won’t change how bad the season has been. United yet stand a chance of winning a European trophy and securing Champions League football in Amorim’s first season if they get past Athletic Club and either Tottenham or Bodo/Glimt.
“Everybody knows it’s really important for our season, but we know nothing is going to save our season,” Amorim said.
“This can be huge, winning a trophy, getting in the Champions League to play European games next year. It could change a lot of things in our club in the summer. But it’s not the most important thing.”
United’s domestic form has been dismal, with the team languishing in an astonishingly low 14th place in the Premier League with four games to go. A Europa League win would secure Champions League qualification and provide financial benefits for sure, but it wouldn’t address the club’s fundamental issues, according to Amorim.
“We have to change the minds of our fans with consistency, good decisions, good recruitment, good academy,” he said. “This is what we need to change to take our club back to the top.”
The Portuguese manager also addressed comments about how fair it is for a team like Manchester United to qualify for the Champions League through the Europa League, despite their poor performances in the league.
“Maybe you can say it’s not fair because the best teams, the champions, should be in the Champions League,” said Amorim. “It’s the rules, I don’t know if it’s fair or not but if there is that possibility we have to try and reach it.”
