Teammate Gavi says Pedri deserves the award “more than any other player”

Barcelona’s midfield maestro Pedri has expressed his ambition to win the Ballon d’Or award. The 22-year old hopes to follow in the footsteps of fellow Spaniard Rodri, who won the award in 2024 ahead of Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior.

“Since Rodri won it, it’s shown that a player who runs the midfield and dictates the tempo and the rhythm of the game can win a Ballon d’Or,” Pedri told UEFA.

However, the Spain international made it clear that his primary focus remains on securing team trophies with Barcelona.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to lift the Ballon d’Or. But right now, there’s a month to go, and the focus is on the team, on winning the three trophies, which is what really matters.

“Once that month is over, we’ll see if we can start talking about things like that.”

Under the guidance of head coach Hansi Flick, Pedri has enjoyed a standout season as Barcelona continue to compete on all fronts in pursuit of a treble. The Catalans have already secured the first part of the treble after their 3-2 victory over Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final in Seville, with Pedri opening the scoring that night.

His performances have not gone unnoticed, with teammate Gavi backing him even ahead of fellow Barcelona stars Raphinha and Lamine Yamal.

“Pedri deserves to win the Ballon d’Or more than any other player,” said Gavi. “His class is evident, everyone knows what a special player he is.”
