For much of the 2024–25 season, it seemed that Inter Milan would cruise to another Serie A title.

Simone Inzaghi’s side were clinical, organised, and ruthless, racing ahead of Napoli, Juventus, and AC Milan in the standings. Their early-season form, including wins over Napoli and Roma, put them firmly in control, while Napoli had to grind through injuries and integrate new players like McTominay and Lukaku.

However, the cracks began to show as the season entered its final third. A 1-0 loss to Bologna raised eyebrows, but it was their heavy 3-0 defeat in the Coppa Italia semi-finals to AC Milan that truly shattered their momentum.

That was followed by a narrow, damaging 1-0 loss to Roma, further tightening the title race. Meanwhile, Napoli, who had stayed patient and consistent behind the scenes, began to close the gap.

Inter’s inability to maintain form under pressure has been stark. Injuries to key players, a congested Champions League schedule, and tactical predictability all contributed to their slip.

While Inter stumbled, Napoli pounced, fueled by the energy and consistency of players like McTominay, Lukaku, and captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo.

Napoli’s Rise to the Top

Unlike Inter, Napoli managed to stay remarkably solid through the difficult periods.

Under Antonio Conte’s disciplined management, they won critical matches, including the 2-0 win against Torino that saw them leapfrog Inter into first place. McTominay’s brace in that match not only wrote him into Napoli folklore but symbolised the club’s steely determination.

The synergy between midfield and attack, and the leadership of experienced players, have all contributed to Napoli’s charge.

Where Inter showed nerves, Napoli showed composure. The team’s ability to maintain form even when trailing Inter by as much as seven points earlier in the season was a testament to their belief and maturity.

Now, with a three-point cushion and only a handful of games left against beatable opponents like Lecce and Cagliari, Napoli look poised to secure another historic title.

From being the chasing pack to leading the charge, Napoli’s rise has been a story of patience, grit, and impeccable timing, while Inter are left to reflect on a season that slipped away at the worst possible moment.
