Harry Kane expects to finalise a new contract with Bayern Munich within days after the club made progress in negotiations with the England captain.

The 33-year-old said most of the major terms had been agreed, with lawyers now working through the remaining details. Kane joined Bayern from Tottenham in 2023 on a four-year deal and is preparing to extend his stay in Germany.

“I know I keep saying we are close, but we are extremely close now,” Kane said on Monday ahead of Bayern’s Champions League match against Atletico Madrid.

“Details are just details in every contract. A lot of the bigger stuff has been ironed out and we are happy with, but in every contract there is loads of little things that go into it, small details that in the end the lawyers have to thrash out and figure out.

“So all in all I would say it is more days than weeks.”

Kane was named the world’s best player at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London last week, but said his focus remained on winning major honours with Bayern. He scored 73 goals for club and country last season, won two trophies in Germany and helped England finish third at the World Cup.

The forward said he would trade another Ballon d’Or for a Champions League title with Bayern.

“Of course, winning the Ballon d’Or was one of the greatest moments of my life, but winning with Bayern, that would be an absolutely incredible feeling,” he said.

“We all want to reach the Champions League final and achieve that great success as a team. At the moment I am still in with a chance of winning both.”

Bayern travel to Atletico amid a difficult spell that has included injuries to several key players and the absence of their manager, Vincent Kompany. The Belgian is recovering at home after being diagnosed with meningeal irritation following a collapse during training.

Aaron Danks, Kompany’s assistant, will again take charge of the team in Madrid. Bayern are also waiting to assess Michael Olise, who picked up a knee problem against Borussia Dortmund but trained on Monday, and Manuel Neuer, who has travelled to Spain as he recovers from a foot injury.

Ismael Saibari faces a lengthy absence after ankle surgery, while Serge Gnabry has suffered a hamstring tear.

Kane described the past week as a “rollercoaster ride” after his individual success in London was followed by a missed penalty in Bayern’s 2-2 draw with Dortmund.

“It has been a rollercoaster ride. We have experienced all sorts of emotions,” he said. “I had a fantastic moment winning the Ballon d’Or, but there were also the injuries and Joshua Kimmich’s situation [earlier in the season] … Those were difficult moments.

“You have to be able to cope with that, sport brings us together. We are missing key players and our coach too, but there are others who can seize this opportunity to show what they’re made of.”

Bayern drew 2-2 with Arsenal in their last Champions League game and sit 14th in the standings with five points. Atletico are 16th with four points and are seeking to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to 10 matches.

Atletico manager Diego Simeone expects his side to face a difficult test against the German champions.

“We will be facing a powerful, strong team and obviously we will have to go through some difficult periods, tough moments, when we will need to play our way out of their pressing, because they are very good at pressing immediately after losing possession,” he said.

Kane believes Bayern can improve their position before the next international break if they win in Madrid and their subsequent Bundesliga match.

“If we can win these next two games – tomorrow night and then in the Bundesliga going into that second international break – we’ll be in a really good place,” he said. “And hopefully after that we’ll have a couple of players coming back. Until then, we just have to stick together and keep doing what we’re doing.”
