Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital after being diagnosed with meningeal irritation, Bayern Munich have confirmed.

The head coach is expected to rest and take medication before returning to work. He was admitted to hospital on Friday after collapsing as he watched the club’s second team train. He had been suffering from a virus and missed Saturday’s 3-1 Bundesliga win at Freiburg. He also missed Wednesday’s German Cup victory over Magdeburg.

Bayern’s director of sport, Max Eberl, announced Kompany’s discharge before the holders beat the second-tier side 6-1 at the Allianz Arena.

“Given the circumstances, he’s doing well,” Eberl said. “He was discharged from the hospital [Wednesday]. That is the biggest and best news for all of us.

“It’s a meningeal irritation that caused this incident on Friday. He will now rest and take medication, and I am certain that he will very soon be back on the touchline, operating at 100%.”

Eberl had said last Friday that Kompany’s absence would be a matter of weeks rather than days. The club have yet to give a precise date for his return, and assistant coach Aaron Danks has continued to lead the team during his recovery.

Danks was in charge again against Magdeburg, where Bayern booked their place in the next round with a convincing win. Michael Olise scored twice, including a penalty, while Ismael Saibari, Alphonso Davies, Nathaniel Brown and David Santos Daiber were also on target. Mateusz Zukowski scored for the visitors.

Harry Kane was rested for the cup tie after receiving a guard of honour from his Bayern teammates before kick-off. The England captain had revealed on Monday that Kompany called him earlier that day to wish him luck ahead of his Ballon d’Or win in London.

Bayern’s players were pleased to hear that their manager had returned home. Brown said the team had also wanted to win for Kompany.

“We’re also winning for him of course,” Brown said. “It’s really good that he’s back home now. He should get some rest, but hopefully we’ll see him again soon.”

Danks said Kompany’s recovery remained the priority, despite the importance of Bayern’s next fixture.

“We’re very pleased that [Vincent] is getting better,” he said. “But he needs to rest, spend time with his family and continue to get better. He’s doing better and is on the road to recovery. We’ll simply try to do our best and prepare for the game on Saturday.”
