Greece secured their first-ever victory over Germany as Dimitrios Kourbelis’ deflected second-half strike sealed a 1-0 Nations League win, leaving Jurgen Klopp without a victory from his opening two games in charge of the hosts.
After a late Netherlands equaliser denied Klopp victory in his first game as Germany head coach, the former Liverpool boss was looking for an immediate response in Augsburg. Instead, Greece produced a historic result.
Germany made five changes to the side that drew with the Netherlands, but the reshuffle did little to improve their attacking threat during a frustrating opening period.
The hosts almost made a fast start when debutant Bambase Conte fired narrowly wide inside the opening three minutes, but Germany struggled to create clear opportunities as Greece remained compact.
It took until the half-hour mark for Klopp’s side to begin imposing themselves on the game. Karim Adeyemi was Germany’s main threat, breaking into the box from the left before firing over the crossbar. The Barcelona forward then forced a save from distance as Germany began to build pressure.
However, the hosts could not turn their possession into a goal. Germany continued to control proceedings after the restart, but the same problem remained. They had the ball and territorial advantage without producing the decisive finish.
As Klopp pushed more players forward in search of an opener, Greece began finding more space on the counter.
Christos Tzolis almost took advantage in the 73rd minute when he raced down the right, but his attempted delivery across the box failed to find a teammate.
A minute later, Greece stunned the home crowd. Tzolis drove down the left before his cutback took a deflection and fell perfectly for Dimitrios Kourbelis on the edge of the box. The midfielder’s shot struck Joshua Kimmich, completely changing direction and leaving Alexander Nubel helpless.
Germany had plenty of time to respond but could not find a way through a determined Greek defence.

The result gives Klopp plenty to think about after his first two games in international management. Germany have now gone without a victory in their last four matches and face another difficult test when they host Serbia.
For Greece, meanwhile, this was a night to remember. The victory was their first-ever against Germany, ending a run of four consecutive defeats in the fixture. More importantly, back-to-back Nations League victories have put them at the top of Group A2 and given them an early advantage in their bid to make an impact in League A.
