Barcelona will leave the Camp Nou again at the end of this season.
The club returned to their traditional ground in November 2025 having spent more than two years away while construction was ongoing.
But the stadium is still unfinished. Work reached a stage where Barcelona could return and play their games there, largely due to financial reasons, but some parts are still undergoing construction.
The Camp Nou’s current capacity is about 62,000, with the first and second tiers of seating completed. The third tier is expected to open progressively from early 2027.
The next stage of construction requires the pitch to be used as a working area. The roof has to be built from inside the stadium, meaning Barcelona cannot continue playing there while work is under way.
The club expect to spend about half of the 2027-28 season at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys at Montjuic while the work is completed.
The plan was confirmed by Barcelona’s vice-president Ferran Olive at the club’s annual general assembly on Saturday. Olive said Barcelona expect to return to the Camp Nou in January 2028, after beginning the work on the roof once this season ends.
“The roof will start progressively as soon as the team has played their last game of the season in May,” Olive said.
Barcelona have already agreed with the city council to return to the Estadi Olimpic, where they played their home matches during the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. They also had to use the 6,000-capacity Estadi Johan Cruyff for two La Liga games during the 2024-25 campaign because of delays to the Camp Nou project.
The first game back at the Camp Nou was in November 2025, when Barcelona beat Athletic Club 4-0 in front of a reduced crowd of about 45,000. Capacity has since increased as more areas of the stadium have been completed.
The club expect the rebuilt stadium to be fully finished and operating at full capacity by the start of the 2028-29 season. Uefa has selected the Camp Nou to host the 2029 Champions League final on 2 June that year.
What are the figures involved?
For fans interested in the accounting numbers, there is also quite a lot of funding needed. Club members approved an additional €510m in borrowing at Saturday’s assembly. €300m of that was allocated to Camp Nou construction and €210m for additional operational funding.
The new borrowing pushes Barcelona’s total debt beyond €2bn and potentially as high as €2.6bn, depending on repayment dates. The overall cost of the Espai Barça project, which includes the Camp Nou redevelopment, has risen to €1.8bn. When the plans were first presented in 2014, they were only estimated to cost around €600m. Real figures are now at least three times as much.
