Roma Complete Late Comeback to Break Atalanta Hearts

Roma scored twice in the final five minutes to overturn a 1-0 deficit and beat Atalanta 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico.

Roma controlled the opening stages and should have taken the lead inside the first 15 minutes. Rodrigo Mora delivered a dangerous cross from the left, but Gianluca Mancini’s powerful header was straight at Marco Carnesecchi.

The goalkeeper was called into action again shortly afterwards when Wesley Franca picked out Bryan Cristante, whose header appeared destined for the bottom corner before Carnesecchi produced another excellent save.

Roma thought they had finally broken through from the resulting corner when Evan Ndicka found the net, but the defender’s effort was ruled out for offside.

Atalanta struggled to create much going forward, with Gianluca Scamacca’s effort straight at Mile Svilar their clearest opening of the first half. Roma continued to threaten, although Carnesecchi remained the difference between the sides.

The Atalanta goalkeeper made another important stop five minutes before the interval, smothering Donyell Malen’s low effort after the Dutchman cut inside from the left.

Despite Roma’s dominance, the visitors delivered a brutal reminder of football’s unpredictability just 90 seconds into the second half.

Charles De Ketelaere beat his man down the left before attempting to pick out a teammate with a cutback. The ball instead ricocheted into the path of Ederson, who made no mistake with a fierce finish that flew beyond Svilar.

Roma immediately searched for an equaliser. Manu Kone saw a close-range effort from a corner denied by Carnesecchi, while the introduction of the hosts’ substitutes brought renewed energy to their attack.

Matias Soule saw a volley comfortably held before Santiago Castro finally beat Carnesecchi, only to watch his effort crash against the post.

Roma refused to relent as the minutes ticked away. Soule was denied by another Carnesecchi save, while Castro struck the woodwork again with a header as Atalanta somehow continued to preserve their lead.

Then, with two minutes of normal time remaining, the resistance finally cracked.

Soule’s corner found Mario Hermoso, whose looping header sailed over Carnesecchi and into the net to send the Olimpico into celebration. Roma were not satisfied with a point. They pushed forward in search of the winner and were rewarded in the third minute of added time.

Paulo Dybala threaded a clever pass into Soule’s path on the right side of the box, and the Argentine kept his composure to fire past Carnesecchi at the near post.

The comeback completed a remarkable turnaround for Roma, who had dominated large portions of the contest before finding themselves behind. It also ended their nine-match winless head-to-head run against Atalanta.

The victory gives Roma three wins from three at the start of the Serie A campaign and sends them back to the top of the table. For Atalanta, the defeat ended their unbeaten start and marked their first away loss at this stage of a season since 2017.
