Lautaro Martinez Seal Stunning Inter Comeback in Five-Goal Thriller

Inter Milan produced a remarkable late comeback to beat Napoli 3-2 at San Siro, overturning a two-goal deficit to maintain their perfect start.

The clash between last season’s top two sides lived up to its billing from the opening whistle. Andy Diouf tested Alex Meret with a first-time effort from distance inside three minutes, before Napoli quickly responded at the other end.

Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa forced Josep Martinez into a sharp reflex save with a low strike through a crowd, while Matteo Politano was unable to convert the rebound from a tight angle. Anguissa remained a threat, dragging another deflected effort narrowly wide as the intensity gradually dipped.

Napoli should have gone into the interval ahead when Rasmus Hojlund found himself with a close-range opportunity, but the striker failed to generate enough power to beat Martinez at his near post. Inter almost punished the miss immediately, with Federico Dimarco’s free-kick crashing against the crossbar.

Cristian Chivu was clearly unhappy with his side’s first-half display and responded by introducing Marcus Thuram and new signing Curtis Jones before the restart. However, the changes initially failed to prevent Inter from collapsing further.

Napoli struck twice in three minutes. A defensive error allowed the visitors to regain possession in a dangerous area, and after Alisson Santos’ effort was parried, Politano reacted quickest to fire home at the second attempt.

Hojlund then doubled Napoli’s advantage moments later. Inter failed to deal with a ball that appeared destined to go out of play, giving the Dane enough time and space to send a low finish into the far corner.

The two-goal deficit finally sparked Inter into life. Napoli’s defence switched off in a similar fashion, allowing Dimarco to keep Piotr Zielinski’s pass alive before Lautaro Martinez slid in to reduce the deficit.

The comeback gathered momentum as Inter piled forward. Thuram came agonisingly close when his stooping header brushed the outside of the post, but Napoli could not withstand the pressure forever.

With eight minutes remaining, Carlos Augusto delivered a deep cross into the box and Thuram rose above the defence to power a header beyond Meret and level the contest.

Napoli appeared to have survived the worst of the pressure, only for Anguissa to miss a golden opportunity to restore their lead from point-blank range.

That miss proved costly. Moments later, Lautaro Martinez completed the turnaround, reacting quickest during a goalmouth scramble to stab the ball home at the back post and send San Siro into raptures.

The victory extends Inter’s unbeaten Serie A run at home to almost 10 months, with the Nerazzurri recording 10 wins and three draws during that stretch. More importantly, the champions return to the top of the table after a comeback that looked almost impossible when Napoli went 2-0 ahead.

For Napoli, it was a painful night. Their first defeat in seven Serie A away matches ended a run of four wins and three draws, while back-to-back losses leave Massimiliano Allegri with plenty to address despite his side’s commanding start at San Siro.
