Paris Saint-Germain are enduring their worst Ligue 1 start in 19 years, but Luis Enrique insists there is no reason to panic.
Paris Saint-Germain’s title defence has taken an unexpected turn after Friday’s 2-1 home defeat to Monaco left the European champions without a win from their opening three Ligue 1 matches.
PSG led at half-time but conceded twice after the break, leaving them with just two points and already seven points behind the early league leaders.

Despite the poor start, Luis Enrique has refused to sound the alarm. The PSG manager pointed to his side’s performance rather than the final score, arguing that Monaco created very little during the match. “There is no reason to be concerned. I say that honestly. How many shots on target did Monaco have? Two. How many goals? Two. We’ll see at the end of the season whether things balance out,” he said.
For Luis Enrique, the bigger picture remains encouraging. PSG pressed aggressively and controlled large portions of the game, with the Spaniard describing their pressing as “sensational”. He believes the defeat was more a case of poor luck and missed opportunities than a sign that his team are suddenly struggling. “You shouldn’t look only at the result,” he added.
That argument will now face a much bigger test as PSG turn their attention to Europe. The Parisians begin the defence of their Champions League crown on Wednesday when they host Slovan Bratislava, with the club chasing a third successive European title.

Their domestic struggles have therefore arrived at an awkward time, although the Champions League provides an immediate opportunity to change the mood around the team.
The statistics make PSG’s start particularly striking. Two points from their first three matches is their worst Ligue 1 opening since the 2007/08 campaign, when the club narrowly avoided relegation. Paul Le Guen’s side did not record their first league victory until their sixth game that season and eventually finished 16th, just three points clear of the relegation places.
Luis Enrique, however, sees the seven-point gap as motivation rather than a crisis. The PSG boss backed his players to close the deficit quickly and even challenged anyone already willing to bet against them winning the title.

“It is incredible motivation for my players, for the team and for the club,” he said. “Seven points? OK, we will try to make up that deficit as quickly as possible.”
The result against Monaco may have exposed some early weaknesses, but PSG’s response could be more important than their opening three results. With a new contract keeping Luis Enrique at the club until 2030, the Spaniard has been given long-term backing to continue his project.
