The league’s greatest goalscorer believes United must push for other summer signings, or Cunha addition would be pointless

Premier League legend Alan Shearer has sent a warning to Manchester United as the club pursue Wolves forward Matheus Cunha ahead of the summer transfer window.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, the former Newcastle striker said that the Brazilian alone won’t solve the club’s problems.

“He wouldn’t make a difference for Man United,” said Shearer. “They’re going to need another six or seven players on top of that. He’s just one of the players, if it is going to happen.

“But yeah I get it and I understand it (the signing). He’ll be a welcome addition, absolutely.”

United are believed to be preparing a summer move for Cunha as part of a major rebuild under manager Ruben Amorim. The 25-year-old has had an impressive season at Wolves, showcasing flair and goalscoring ability that has reportedly gained him admirers within Old Trafford.

Shearer, who scored 260 goals in 441 English top-flight appearances, has also questioned whether United will have the financial freedom to make multiple high-value signings this summer.

The club are nestling in 14th place, far outside the Champions League places, with their only hopes of qualifying for Europe being to win the Europa League. The former England captain believes their spending power may hinge on winning that trophy.

He then went on to name Southampton’s Liam Delap as a player United should be targeting in addition to Cunha.

“They need a top-class centre-forward like Delap, but they need someone like Cunha as well. Whether they can go out and spend that much, I don’t know. I suspect that may depend whether they get into the Champions League or not.

“I’ve read there’s about a £30 million release clause for Liam Delap, which means someone is going to get a real bargain. That isn’t a lot of money for a centre-forward with big potential, like he has.”
