The England captain stands one win away from clinching his first major trophy
Harry Kane is set to end his long wait for silverware as soon as Saturday, as Bayern Munich prepare to host Mainz in a match that could seal the Bundesliga title if Bayer Leverkusen fail to beat Augsburg.
The 31-year-old has been a force of nature since arriving in Germany, racking up an astonishing 60 goals in 60 league appearances. With 24 of those coming this season, he’s also in pole position to become back-to-back top scorer in his first two Bundesliga campaigns, a feat never before achieved in the competition’s history.
Bayern currently sit top of the league with 72 points and four games to play, holding an eight-point advantage over reigning champions Leverkusen. Should the title return to Bavaria this weekend, it would mark the club’s 34th domestic league crown.
It is also a statement of intent after the club surrendered meekly last season while Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen claimed the league and the DFB-Pokal.
Saturday’s clash at the Allianz Arena carries additional emotional weight. Club icon Thomas Muller is expected to reach the 500-game milestone in the Bundesliga with the Bavarians, before departing at the end of the season.
At 35, Muller will join an exclusive group of one-club legends in the league’s history, alongside Frankfurt’s Charly Korbel (602 games), Hamburg’s Manfred Kaltz (581), and Bochum’s Michael Lameck (518).
Bayern’s push for the title also comes on the heels of their painful Champions League quarter-final exit to Inter Milan last week, a disappointment the club is eager to move past with domestic silverware firmly in sight.
Kane himself said afterwards that he and his teammates had to pick up the pieces, telling journalists, “We can’t let this ruin our season now.”
All eyes now turn to Saturday. Should Leverkusen stumble and Bayern deliver, Kane will finally lift a trophy that has been years in the making, after years of near-misses and two final losses with Tottenham Hotspur and England.
