Match Preview: Inter Milan Face Cagliari in First Serie A away Test

Inter Milan will make their first away trip of the 2026/27 Serie A season on Sunday when they visit Cagliari.

Reigning Serie A champions Inter Milan could hardly have made a stronger start to their title defence, beating newly promoted Monza 4-1 at San Siro last weekend. Cagliari, meanwhile, also picked up three points on the opening weekend, edging Parma 1-0 away from home.

Inter enter the game as overwhelming favourites after winning the domestic double last season and opening the new campaign with another convincing performance.

Cristian Chivu’s side were briefly made to work against Monza after Hakan Calhanoglu’s spectacular opener was cancelled out, but the Nerazzurri eventually pulled away after the break. Piotr Zielinski, Francesco Pio Esposito and Yann Bisseck all found the net to complete a 4-1 victory.

Pio Esposito was arguably the biggest positive from the performance. The young striker scored a spectacular goal and also provided an assist, giving Chivu another exciting attacking option alongside captain Lautaro Martinez.

Now Inter must show that they can produce the same intensity away from San Siro.

Cagliari will certainly not be intimidated. Fabio Pisacane’s side began their campaign with an impressive 1-0 victory at Parma, meaning they arrive at the Unipol Domus with their confidence high and the chance to start a season with back-to-back victories.

The Rossoblu collected 43 points last season and have retained Pisacane as they look to build on that campaign. Their squad has also undergone changes, particularly in midfield and attacking areas, giving the coach several new options.

Team News

Cagliari have no suspended players heading into the game, while Idrissi and Trepy are unavailable. Pisacane is expected to stick with the side that defeated Parma, with Daniel Maldini and Michel Adopo playing behind striker Paul Mendy.

Inter have no major injury concerns, but Stones is again expected to begin on the bench as Chivu keeps his defensive trio intact. Pio Esposito and Lautaro are expected to retain their places up front.
