Iraola wins on return to Vitality
As expected, it was a tight game throughout, but three minutes before the hour Liverpool got what turned out to be the winner at Bournemouth.
Cody Gakpo created the chance when he made a run down the right and crossed for Florian Wirtz. The German was unable to make contact under pressure but the ball found Alexander Isak, who was unmarked near the six-yard box, and the Swede swept the ball past Djordje Petrovic for his fourth goal of the season.

Sublime Szoboszlai caps cup joy
Liverpool needed a response after the flat performance against Fulham and got one against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup. A 3-1 victory at Anfield sent Iraola’s side into the fourth round, with Alexis Mac Allister opening the scoring and Cody Gakpo doubling the lead early in the second half.
Tottenham pulled one back through Conor Gallagher after a mistake in the Liverpool goal gave them hope, but helping the side avoid another nervy finish was Anfield’s man of the year Dominik Szoboszlai, who fired in a superb long-range effort in stoppage time.
It was a useful reminder that there is plenty of attacking quality available to Iraola even if his Premier League side has not yet clicked. Mac Allister has now scored in consecutive midweek games. Gakpo has also contributed heavily in the final third after almost leaving the club this summer.
Liverpool have now won their last two matches in cup and European competition. Now the challenge is transferring that form to the league.

Frustration against Fulham
The Champions League victory over Atletico was followed by a much less convincing afternoon against Fulham. Liverpool were held to a 0-0 draw at Anfield by a Fulham side that had lost their first three league matches, leaving Iraola’s team with just one win from their opening four Premier League games.
There was little attacking fluency from the home side. Victor Munoz came closest when his header struck the crossbar, but Liverpool struggled to create enough clear chances to break down a Fulham defence that had conceded seven times in their previous three matches.
Iraola pointed to a lack of freshness after the midweek European game. The manager remains unbeaten since taking charge, but three draws from four league games leaves the side needing lift off.

A winning European start
Liverpool’s first Champions League night under Andoni Iraola ended with a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid at Anfield. Atletico struck first through Marcos Llorente, but Liverpool recovered before half-time through Dominik Szoboszlai and then went ahead through Alexis Mac Allister early in the second half.
It was an important response after the Reds had drawn their opening two Premier League matches against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest before finally beating Ipswich. Iraola’s side are still searching for consistency, but European football provided a more encouraging setting.
The result also gave Liverpool something they had been missing in the league: a game in which they had to respond to a setback and protect a narrow advantage. They managed both.

Isak braces up for season
A night of double joy for Liverpool. Not only was Isak the most potent weapon on the pitch, his quickfire early brace to bury Ipswich handed Andoni Iraola his first victory in charge. After an underwhelming, injury-hit first season that followed his £125m move, Isak hopes his performance tonight is the liftoff he needs to finally get going.

Trust the process?
It will have to be a slow and steady process for Liverpool under Andoni Iraola. Narrowly escaping defeat against Newcastle in their first game, here at Anfield they also needed a late goal from Victor Munoz to snatch a draw against an impressive Nottingham Forest side.

Last-gasp draw at St James’ Park
St James’ Park is never an easy place to visit, as Alexander Isak found out on this night. Liverpool were matched and outperformed by a Newcastle side whose new manager only had less than three weeks to prepare his team.
A contentious penalty was needed at the end to salvage a draw, Dominik Szoboszlai stepping up to the spot despite Lewis Hall’s protests of innocence. The match report:

Ambling with Andoni
After a horrid title defence last season Liverpool decided to part ways with Arne Slot, who had won the Premier League in his first season. Replacing him is Andoni Iraola who, besides specialising in building an energetic, young squad, is also known for his penchant for arithmetic progression up the league table.
Taking over at Bournemouth in 15th place, he moved the Cherries to 12th, 9th and then 6th in the past three seasons, qualifying for Europe. He then quit when the ovation was loudest.
One would presume that wouldn’t be the case with him at Anfield, where there is no shortage of ovation for a manager – or boos, depending on the feeling.
Nevertheless, after a summer of transfer business that doesn’t quite inspire confidence, Liverpool will be needing all of Iraola’s squad-building skills this season.
