Bayern Munich Begin Bundesliga Title Defence With Five-star Demolition of Stuttgart

Bayern Munich made a statement on the opening night of the Bundesliga season, thrashing Stuttgart 5-1 at the Allianz Arena to begin their title defence in emphatic fashion.

Bayern Munich extended their remarkable record in Friday-night Bundesliga openers, while Stuttgart were left wondering what might have been after briefly threatening to make life uncomfortable for Vincent Kompany’s side.

Stuttgart came flying out of the blocks and should have taken the lead inside the opening stages. Tiago Tomas found himself in a promising position and struck the bar from close range after Grischa Promel had headed the ball into his path.

That warning appeared to wake Bayern up. The hosts gradually took control and finally broke the deadlock just past the 20-minute mark.

Joshua Kimmich delivered a dangerous cross towards the near post, where Dayot Upamecano rose highest above Josha Vagnoman to guide a header into the far corner and give Bayern the advantage.

Bayern could have doubled their lead before the break. Luis Diaz was denied by Fabian Bredlow after going clean through, while Michael Olise narrowly missed with a curling effort from distance. Nathaniel Brown also forced the Stuttgart goalkeeper into action as the champions began finding gaps on the counter.

Stuttgart refused to simply sit back, however, and their bravery was rewarded shortly after half-time. Manuel Neuer produced an excellent save to deny Tiago Tomas, but the rebound fell perfectly for Vagnoman, who smashed a powerful effort from the edge of the box to make it 1-1.

The equaliser only seemed to anger Bayern.

The hosts immediately raised the tempo and regained the lead through Olise, who calmly finished into the bottom corner after being played through by Kimmich. Moments later, Stuttgart’s afternoon went from bad to worse when Vagnoman slipped on the wet surface and inadvertently turned Alphonso Davies’ cross into his own net.

At 3-1, Bayern were firmly in control, and Kompany soon turned to his new signing Ismael Saibari.

The Moroccan wasted little time making his mark. Olise produced a brilliant piece of skill to keep the ball alive before releasing Saibari, who showed composure to tee up Aleksandar Pavlovic for Bayern’s fourth.

There was still time for one more, and Saibari was involved again. This time, he slipped Diaz through on goal, allowing the Colombian to calmly finish into the bottom corner and complete a brutal second-half display.
