Liverpool have made a £50m bid to Brighton for Yankuba Minteh, although it was quickly rejected.
The Reds have a hole in their squad where Mohamed Salah used to be and believe the 22-year-old winger will help to fill it.
Liverpool have already signed Spain international Victor Munoz but he is primarily a left-sided player, so they are still in the market for another winger. There has been interest in Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola, but the two clubs are wide apart in his valuation. PSG’s Ibrahim Mbaye is also among the players under consideration.
Would Minteh be a good signing for Liverpool though? He certainly has pace and the ability to take on defenders, skillset that has made him an attractive option for the Reds. He attempted 142 dribbles in the Premier League last season, with a 46% success rate, placing him fourth in the division behind Jeremy Doku, Antoine Semenyo and Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye.
However, his end product is underwhelming. Minteh produced just three league goals and four assists last season. The season before that he produced six league goals and four assists.
Compare that for example to Sadio Mane, who played for Southampton and reached double digits in league goals in the two seasons before he joined Liverpool. Salah joined from abroad.
Minteh is understood to be interested in a move, so Liverpool would have to decide whether to improve their offer to north of £50m.
