PSG have now become the fourth side in football history to win back-to-back UEFA Super Cup titles.

PSG weren’t at their best but stamped their place once again as the top team in Europe as they ran out 2-1 winners in the UEFA Super Cup.

Although it didn’t start in the fiercest of ways, the Super Cup final was an interesting game to open the new European season with. The first shot of the game came in the 13th minute when Kamara tested Safonov with a decent effort down to his right.

That shot sparked PSG to life as they saw a lot of goalmouth action with Kvaratskhelia dancing around his opponents in the box, before pouncing on a recycled pass and striking the ball wonderfully to give PSG the lead.

PSG, who barely played like their usual selves in the first half, nearly got a second. A clever passage of play put Nuno Mendes past the Aston Villa defence and free to run into acres of space. The PSG man played a dangerous ball, but it somehow evaded all the runners.

Aston Villa youngster Madjo was a revelation on the night. He got himself into a good position but failed to put about four chances into the net, but on the fifth try, he pulled Villa level with just minutes to go unitl half-time.

Madjo also made history by becoming the youngest player to start and score in a UEFA Super Cup final.

Early on in the second half, McGinn tested Safonov with a good strike and the PSG keeper was equal to the task. Aston Villa really did seem to be coming into the game, only for Doue to score against the run of play.

Dembele, who had just come on as a substitute, played a through pass to Doue, who ran behind the Villa defence and finished calmly. At first, it was ruled for offside but after VAR review, the goal was awarded.

Both teams created loads of chances in between, making the game end-to-end, but none could make it stick. Aston Villa had one final chance to equalize, but Buendia could only head Maatsen’s cross away from goal.

PSG may have mot played like their usual selves, but it was enough to secure the trophy. They have now won back-to-back UEFA Super Cup titles, joining the likes of Ajax (1973 and 1974), C Milan (1989 and 1990) and Real Madrid (2016 and 2017).
