Inter Milan are closing in on a deal for Tottenham defender Djed Spence, with the Italian giants increasingly confident the England international can become a key part of their squad.
Inter have been working towards an agreement with Tottenham for Spence and talks are now progressing towards a potential €30 million (£25.6m) transfer.
The Nerazzurri have become convinced that the 25-year-old has the qualities needed to succeed in Serie A, both on and off the pitch.
Spence’s performances have played a major role in Inter’s interest, but the club’s assessment has reportedly gone beyond his statistics. Their recruitment team has also been impressed by his character, mentality and personality, with his calmness and determination viewed as important qualities for a player making the move to Milan.
The potential transfer would see Spence return to Italy, where he already has experience of playing in Serie A. His loan spell with Genoa in 2024 gave him valuable exposure to Italian football and allowed Inter to assess how he adapted to the tactical and physical demands of the league.

That experience is now working in his favour. Inter believe Spence’s familiarity with Serie A could allow him to settle quicker than a player arriving in Italy for the first time.
Why Inter Want Spence
Inter’s need for a new option on the right has also made Spence an attractive target.
The club lost Denzel Dumfries to Real Madrid during the summer and have been looking for a long-term solution capable of providing energy and attacking threat from the flank.
Spence fits that profile. The Tottenham defender can operate as a full-back or wing-back and has the pace to support attacks while possessing the defensive ability to handle demanding one-on-one situations.
His versatility could be particularly valuable to Inter, whose system places significant responsibility on the wing-backs. The Englishman would be expected to provide width, carry the ball forward and contribute defensively when the team loses possession.
Inter’s confidence is therefore based on more than his potential. They have already seen Spence operate in Serie A and believe his previous experience, combined with his development since leaving Italy, makes him ready for a bigger challenge.
Tottenham are now expected to give the transfer the green light, with negotiations focused on finalising the terms of the €30m agreement. If those discussions conclude successfully, Spence will be on course for a permanent return to Italy.
For Inter, the move would address an important position while giving them a player they believe has both the technical qualities and mentality to become a long-term success at San Siro. For Spence, it could represent the opportunity to turn his previous Serie A experience into a permanent chapter in Italian football.
