Monaco are considering an abrupt end to their relationship with French midfielder Paul Pogba after he suffered another injury.
Pogba suffered a new thigh injury on Tuesday during Monaco’s training camp at St George’s Park in England, just as he was attempting to build up his fitness ahead of the new Ligue 1 season.
The 33-year-old had only recently returned to group training after struggling with a long-term knee problem. His latest setback is particularly concerning because Pogba has played only 45 minutes of football during Monaco’s pre-season, leaving him some way short of the fitness required to compete regularly.
The injury could also bring his short spell with Monaco to an abrupt end. Reports indicate that the club are considering cancelling Pogba’s contract, which was originally due to run until June 2027, potentially leaving the midfielder as a free agent once again.
Pogba joined Monaco last summer after serving an 18-month doping ban and was hoping to rebuild his career in France. However, his first season proved extremely difficult. He made just six Ligue 1 appearances, totalling only 115 minutes, after spending much of the campaign dealing with fitness problems.

His latest setback adds another chapter to an extraordinary decline for a player who was once regarded as one of the finest midfielders in world football. Manchester United paid Juventus a then-world-record fee of €105 million to bring Pogba back to England in 2016, but injuries and inconsistency eventually overshadowed his second spell at Old Trafford.
Pogba’s Career at a Crossroads
The midfielder’s problems continued after returning to Juventus as a free agent in 2022. A doping suspension, followed by injuries, severely disrupted his comeback and eventually led to the termination of his Juventus contract by mutual consent in December 2024.
Pogba’s doping ban was later reduced on appeal, allowing him to return to competitive football in March 2025. Monaco subsequently offered him an opportunity to restart his career, but the Frenchman has struggled to stay fit.
That makes the latest injury particularly significant. With Monaco reportedly considering ending his contract, Pogba could soon have to decide whether to search for another club or consider retirement at 33.
His achievements earlier in his career underline just how dramatic the situation has become. Pogba made 190 appearances for Juventus, scoring 34 goals and providing 40 assists, while he was also a key member of France’s 2018 World Cup-winning squad.
The talent has never really been in question. The problem has been Pogba’s ability to remain available, and another muscular injury just as he was returning to training has left his career facing another major crossroads.
For now, Pogba’s immediate future remains unclear. But with Monaco potentially ready to end his contract and his latest injury limiting his chances of starting the season, the former Manchester United and Juventus midfielder faces perhaps the biggest decision of his career.
