Kalvin Phillips Is Manchester City’s Biggest Transfer Fail Under Guardiola – and His Woes Continue

Kalvin Phillips has returned to Sheffield United on a season-long loan from Manchester City.

The 30-year-old spent part of last season with Sheffield United but made only three appearances before a red card against Sheffield Wednesday led to a three-match suspension. A knee injury then ended his campaign.

It was the continuation of the dismal time the former England international has had since he left Leeds for City in 2022. It was quickly discovered by Guardiola and his staff that he did not have what it took to play in City’s midfield.

Since then he has gone on loan after loan, and he has not managed to rebuild his career in any of the clubs, some misfortune or the other always dooming his stay.

Sheffield were pleased to have him but the red card and injury made it impossible for him to achieve much. This second loan deal is another chance for him to get his career back on track.

“This was the move I wanted,” Phillips said. “My time was spoiled by my last game and the injury after that so I’m here to put that right.”

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder said Phillips would bring experience to a young squad and backed him to set an example.

“Since the first day Kalvin walked through the door here, he instantly ticked the boxes in terms of personality and character, both on the field and behind the scenes and he offers more experience in a crucial area of the pitch,” Wilder said.

“Kalvin is a winner. He’s achieved plenty in his career and he’ll set the example to this young squad we have here.”

Phillips signed a six-year contract when he joined City for £42m. He has made only 32 appearances, most as a substitute.

His first loan spell was at West Ham, whom he joined in January 2024 but immediately made a mistake and gave away a goal in his first game. He made just 10 appearances for the club.

Phillips then joined Ipswich and made 22 appearances, but he was badly affected by injuries before the club ended the season relegated from the Premier League.

In the summer of 2025, Phillips returned to City and ended a 645-day wait for an appearance in September, coming on as a substitute in a 2-0 Carabao Cup win against Huddersfield Town.

But then he barely played after that and in January 2026 he went out on the ill-fated loan to Sheffield. Perhaps his second spell there will be a happier one.
