Luis Diaz scored a stunning solo goal as Bayern Munich defeated Aston Villa 2-1 in Hong Kong.

Luis Diaz produced a moment of brilliance as Bayern Munich defeated Aston Villa 2-1 in an entertaining pre-season friendly in Hong Kong, giving Vincent Kompany’s side another confidence-boosting victory ahead of the new campaign.

The Colombian winger, fresh from helping his country reach the World Cup round of 16, was the standout performer as Bayern overcame the Europa League holders despite travelling without several key stars, including Harry Kane and Michael Olise.

Bayern opened the scoring in the 37th minute through Kim Min-jae. The South Korean defender timed his run perfectly before glancing a well-delivered free-kick into the far corner from close range to give the Bundesliga champions a deserved lead.

After introducing several experienced players in the second half, Bayern began to dominate proceedings. Diaz had already seen one effort cleared off the goal line before producing the game’s defining moment with just under 20 minutes remaining.

The 29-year-old collected the ball on the left flank, cut inside past his marker and unleashed a spectacular curling strike that crashed in off the crossbar, sending the majority of the 38,000 supporters inside Kai Tak Stadium into celebration.

Aston Villa refused to give up and reduced the deficit in the 83rd minute through new signing João Gomes, whose powerful effort from outside the penalty area gave Manuel Neuer no chance. Moments later, Neuer preserved Bayern’s lead with a superb reaction save to deny Tammy Abraham from point-blank range.

Speaking after the match, Bayern manager Vincent Kompany praised the attitude of his squad, particularly given the absence of several first-team regulars. The Belgian admitted he was impressed by how the younger players maintained the club’s identity throughout most of the contest.

Villa, meanwhile, continue adapting to life without Morgan Rogers following the England international’s British-record move to Chelsea.

Unai Emery’s side now turn their attention to the UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain before opening their Premier League campaign away to Brighton later this month.
