It was always going to be a tall order for Vinicius Junior to join Arsenal.

Not because Arsenal are not a great team – they proved last season they were the best team in England, and one of the best in Europe – but for the reasons mentioned here.

The Brazil forward has now committed his future to Real Madrid after signing a new contract that will keep him at the club until June 2032.

With the 26-year-old entering the final year of his contract, Arsenal were prepared to pursue an ambitious deal. Madrid were then forced to concede to most of Vinicius’s financial demands and secure a six-year commitment to remain at the Bernabeu.

“Real Madrid and Vinicius Junior have agreed on the extension of our player’s contract, which links him to the club until 30 June 2032,” the club said in a statement.

“Vinicius Junior joined Real Madrid in July 2018 at the age of 18. In his eight seasons wearing our jersey, he has played 375 matches, scored 128 goals, and won 14 titles: two Champions League trophies, three Club World Cups, two Uefa Super Cups, three La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey, and three Spanish Super Cups.

“His contribution to all these titles has been pivotal due to his gameplay, assists, and goals.”

The forward also confirmed the agreement in a message on social media, saying: “Eight years at the Bernabeu are too few … six more years, and for ever!”

Arsenal have become an attractive club

But Arsenal are not losers here after failing to secure a deal. Some might say it could have been seen from a mile away that Vinicius was only using the Gunners to secure a lucrative contract extension in the Spanish capital, but the Premier League side still come out of it looking good.

For one thing, it is evident now that Arsenal have become an attractive club. To use a club to secure a contract extension at Madrid it has to be a club worth playing for.

Last season Arsenal won their first English title in 22 years and they reached the Champions League final, losing on penalties to Luis Enrique’s Paris Saint-Germain. It was the second time in two years they had reached at least the semi-finals of Europe’s biggest competition, each time losing only to the eventual winners.

With this summer’s transfer buzz, other elite players will look at Arsenal now and see a destination.

For another, the club have also demonstrated their ambition. They have shown readiness to recruit the very best players in the world and build on the success they have already had.

Arsenal may not have got their man in the end but fans have every reason to be thrilled.
