The two additions are unlikely to generate the same excitement as Chelsea’s blockbuster moves for younger stars, but they address a criticism that has followed the club for several seasons: a lack of experienced voices in key moments.
Alonso’s successful Bayer Leverkusen side thrived because it balanced exciting young players with seasoned professionals, and Chelsea’s latest business suggests he is attempting to replicate that formula at Stamford Bridge.
Why Welbeck Still Has Plenty to Offer Chelsea
At 35, Danny Welbeck arrives after arguably one of the best Premier League campaigns of his career. The former Brighton striker registered 13 league goals last season, his highest return in England’s top flight, while continuing to demonstrate the intelligent movement, relentless pressing and selfless link-up play that have made him such a valuable forward throughout his career.

Chelsea are not signing Welbeck simply to score goals. His experience, professionalism and leadership could prove just as valuable to a squad that remains one of the youngest in the Premier League.
He offers tactical flexibility across the front line, understands how to operate in high-intensity pressing systems and gives Alonso another reliable option capable of influencing matches even when he is not finding the back of the net.
His arrival also provides younger attackers with an experienced figure to learn from. For a dressing room packed with developing talent, Welbeck’s presence could be every bit as important off the pitch as it is on it.
Henderson Brings Leadership Chelsea Have Been Missing
Jordan Henderson’s arrival has generated more debate, particularly regarding whether the 36-year-old still possesses the physical attributes required to compete consistently in the Premier League. While questions remain about his mobility and ball progression compared to younger midfielders, there is little doubt about what he brings from a leadership perspective.

Few English midfielders possess Henderson’s experience of winning major honours. His vocal presence, professionalism and demanding standards have been praised throughout his career, and those qualities are exactly what Chelsea’s relatively young squad has lacked in recent seasons.
Welbeck’s Arrival Creates a Striker Problem
While Welbeck strengthens Chelsea’s attacking options, his signing also creates a significant selection headache. The Blues now have five recognised senior strikers in their squad: Danny Welbeck, Joao Pedro, Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap and Marc Guiu.
That level of depth makes further departures almost inevitable before the transfer window closes.
