Roma threw away a 3-0 advantage in a dramatic 3-3 pre-season draw with Cannes.
Roma were forced to settle for a thrilling 3-3 draw against French side Cannes after surrendering a three-goal advantage in their latest pre-season friendly, with Wesley’s first-half dismissal proving to be the turning point of the match.
The game marked Gian Piero Gasperini’s first friendly outside Italy this summer as the Giallorossi travelled to face Cannes, another club owned by the Friedkin family. Roma were without injured midfielder Niccolò Pisilli, while Manu Koné and Neil El Aynaoui remained on post-World Cup leave.
Despite those absences, Roma fielded a strong starting lineup and quickly took control of the contest. Paulo Dybala opened the scoring with a stunning free-kick that curled into the top corner, showcasing the quality that has made him one of the club’s most influential players.
Just nine minutes later, Dybala turned provider by setting up Donyell Malen for Roma’s second goal, as the Italian side dominated proceedings and looked well on course for a comfortable victory.
However, the match changed dramatically before halftime when new signing Wesley was sent off after picking up two yellow cards in quick succession. The Brazilian’s dismissal left Roma with 10 men for the remainder of the encounter and handed Cannes a lifeline.
Even with the numerical disadvantage, Roma extended their lead shortly after the restart. Dybala grabbed his second goal of the afternoon by finishing confidently after being played through by Devyne Rensch, making it 3-0 and seemingly putting the result beyond doubt.
Cannes refused to give up and gradually took advantage of their extra player. Julien Lopez sparked the comeback with a powerful volley before adding a second goal later in the match as Roma’s tiring defence struggled to cope with the pressure.
The French side completed the remarkable comeback in stoppage time when Brice Oggad converted a penalty after Artem Dovbyk conceded a foul inside the area. The late spot-kick sealed a dramatic 3-3 draw, leaving Roma to reflect on a missed opportunity after throwing away a commanding lead.
