Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has fueled speculation about a possible summer move by expressing his desire to one day play in La Liga.
The Argentine centre-back, who has become a key figure in Spurs’ backline, made the comments in a recent interview, saying, “I’d love to play in La Liga. I’d love to, honestly.”
Romero, 26, has been linked with Atletico Madrid, and his remarks have only intensified rumours that a switch to Spain could be on the cards.
While he made it clear that nothing is confirmed yet, saying he hasn’t even spoken to his agent, the openness in his words suggests he may be considering a new chapter in his career.
“It depends on a lot of things,” Romero said. “We’ll see after the [English] championship is over. The truth is, I haven’t spoken to my agent yet, but I’m open to anything. My goal is always to grow and go to new places to continue developing.”
Despite the speculation, Romero remains focused on the present. He’s a key part of Ange Postecoglou’s squad and is expected to play a vital role in the club’s upcoming Europa League semi-final clash against Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt.
Spurs are hoping to end a trophy drought and secure Champions League qualification, which could also play a role in Romero’s final decision.
“Above all else, I try to take one day at a time,” he added. “We’re in the Europa League semi-finals. It’s an important step for the club, which hasn’t reached this stage for many years. I’d like to win it.”
Romero’s contract with Spurs runs until 2027, but the club may face a tough task keeping hold of him if European giants come calling this summer.
Interest from La Liga isn’t the only possibility — Turkish, Saudi, and even MLS clubs have reportedly kept tabs on him in the past.
Tottenham fans will be hoping Romero stays put, especially if the club can end the season on a high. But with the defender’s growing reputation and his own ambition to “go to new places,” his future in North London remains uncertain.
