Club are concerned about the midfielder’s fitness situation, which could scupper a move
Real Madrid have become more open to signing Rodri after the Manchester City midfielder’s performances at the World Cup, although there have been no confirmed talks with the Premier League club over a transfer.
The Spain captain was not regarded as a realistic target for Madrid earlier this summer, with concerns inside the club over his fitness record and new head coach Jose Mourinho favouring a different type of profile in midfield.
Those reservations have softened after Rodri helped Spain win the World Cup and collected the Golden Ball as the tournament’s outstanding player. However, no negotiations between Madrid and City have been confirmed.
Rodri, who turned 30 last month, has spent the past two seasons battling injuries after suffering a serious knee ligament injury in a match against Arsenal in September 2024. His recovery was slower than expected, leading to doubts within Madrid about the risks involved in pursuing a deal.
The club’s caution has also been shaped by the situation of David Alaba and Dani Carvajal, who suffered major knee injuries in recent years and spent most of that time on the sidelines.
Rodri has indeed suffered a back problem after the World Cup this summer and is expected to undergo minor surgery. But the procedure is not expected to keep him out for an extended period and it remains to be seen whether Madrid will still pursue their interest in those circumstances.
