The forward has one year left on his contract but did not prove himself indispensable last season
Barcelona are ready to sell Ferran Torres this summer to avoid paying an additional sum to Manchester City that would kick in if they renew his contract.
Torres is under contract until June 2027, but no extension has been agreed. Barcelona would reportedly owe City around €8m if the 26-year-old signed a new deal, under a clause included in the agreement that took him to Camp Nou in January 2022.
The initial transfer from City was worth €55m, with a further €10m in performance-related add-ons that have now been triggered. An extension would increase the overall cost of the deal to about €73m.
Sources close to the situation said Barcelona sporting director Deco is reluctant to offer Torres fresh terms because of the payment that would become due to City. Senior figures at the club are also aware that selling the forward this summer would avoid the risk of losing him for nothing when his contract expires.
Barcelona insist no final decision has been taken and Torres could still remain at the club. Sources close to the player also said every option remains under consideration, including signing a new contract, with a decision expected after the World Cup.
Reports in Spain last week linked Torres with Paris Saint-Germain, although Barcelona sources said the French club have not submitted an offer.
Barcelona also believe Atletico Madrid could hold an interest because their sporting director, Mateu Alemany, was in the same role at Camp Nou when Torres joined.
Any departure would mean further changes to Hansi Flick’s attack after Robert Lewandowski left at the end of his contract and Marcus Rashford returned to Manchester United.
Barcelona have, however, added Anthony Gordon from Newcastle for €80m and agreed a deal with Borussia Dortmund for Karim Adeyemi, worth an initial €22m plus bonuses. They are also eyeing a move for Atletico forward Julian Alvarez as their preferred long-term No 9, although Atletico have insisted they will not sell.
