Chelsea have reportedly taken the lead in the race to sign Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa, with Paris Saint-Germain now appearing to cool their interest in the Portugal international.
Costa has emerged as one of the standout goalkeepers in European football following another impressive campaign for Porto and a strong showing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he started all five of Portugal’s matches.
PSG had previously been linked with a move for the 26-year-old, but their plans have reportedly changed after Lucas Chevalier decided to remain at the club for at least another season despite competition from Matvey Safonov.
Although the French champions explored the possibility of signing another goalkeeper, they aren’t in desperate need, with both Chevalier and Safonov still under contract.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are pushing ahead with their pursuit. According to reports, the Blues have identified Costa as their priority target as new manager Xabi Alonso looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the new campaign.

The Premier League club remain unconvinced by Robert Sanchez as their long-term first-choice goalkeeper, while Mike Penders has returned from his loan spell at Strasbourg without guaranteeing a starting role at Stamford Bridge.
Costa is under contract with Porto until June 2030 and is widely regarded as one of Europe’s elite goalkeepers thanks to his Champions League pedigree, and performances for Portugal at the 2026 World Cup. His performances have attracted interest from several of the continent’s biggest clubs.
Costa is currently valued at around £34 million, although his contract reportedly contains a release clause worth £51 million. With Chelsea now leading the chase and PSG appearing reluctant to meet Porto’s demands, the Blues could be in pole position to secure one of the summer’s most significant goalkeeping signings.
