Michael Olise is not on Real Madrid’s radar this summer, at least not officially. But you bet they would kill (metaphorically speaking) to have him.
A mystery €150m bid for a superstar promised by Florentino Perez in the run-up to the Madrid elections earlier this year turned out to be aimed at Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez.
The only thing Atletico could do was say no? The local rivals went beyond that and posted on social media, blasting Madrid for making a move on their player. The bid was not followed up after being rejected and Madrid dropped their interest.
At least, it is easy enough to see that Madrid do not have a major gap to be filled in the centre of attack. Kylian Mbappe does well enough, even if he occasionally drifts to the left and he and Vinicius get in each other’s way.
But on the right of attack, there it is evident that Madrid need a top-quality option, with Rodrygo injured, Franco Mastantuono inexperienced and perhaps not much of wide player, and Brahim Diaz a level below the kind of star quality Madrid would prefer. Olise on the right would be a dream signing for Madrid, and a massive coup if they can take him away from Bayern Munich.
The France international is expected to hold talks with Bayern over his future after the World Cup, with reports claiming he wants clarity on his position at the club.
Olise plans to meet Bayern president Herbert Hainer once France’s World Cup campaign ends, according to one source. The 24-year-old is said to believe his stock has increased, as is evident at this summer’s tournament, and he wants that reflected in his salary.
The winger has been one of France’s standout players in America, registering six assists as Didier Deschamps’ side reached the semi-finals, where they will face Spain.
Real Madrid are reported to be monitoring the situation closely. Olise also has several France teammates who ply their trade for Madrid, including Kylian Mbappe, Aurelien Tchouameni and Ibrahima Konate, and they have encouraged him to consider a move to the Bernabeu, according to sources.
Any deal would be difficult to complete, however. Bayern signed Olise from Crystal Palace for €55m in 2024 and he remains under contract for another three years.
Bayern certainly have no intention of letting him go, and with his value on the rise, they have every right to believe that he could help deliver the Champions League in coming seasons. Even if he were to request a move, such a transfer would be highly expensive.
Bayern are said to be open to a new contract, which will not only increase the winger’s salary from €8m net to €14m net per season, but also extend his stay at the club and keep all the cards in the club’s hands.
However, it is understood that Olise’s representatives are advising him to delay signing a new deal, which would strengthen his position and ensure even better terms in future negotiations as his existing contract runs down.
If Madrid are to swoop in, it would have to be in a year or two in the context of a delayed contract renewal, and perhaps then they could offer better terms to Olise with Bayern in a weakened position.
