The winger has attracted interest from America, Saudi Arabia and Europe but is yet to make a decision
Major League Soccer club Sporting Kansas City has entered the race to sign Mohamed Salah should the Egypt forward decide to continue his career stateside.
Salah left Liverpool at the end of last season but has not declared his next destination. The Egyptian could remain in Europe, head closer to home in Saudi Arabia, or choose to play in America.
Whatever option he decides, Salah will not be short of suitors, but sources understand that he currently favours staying in Europe. Besides MLS, the 34-year-old has also attracted strong interest from the Saudi Pro League. However, he has not ruled out a switch to MLS, so that is still on the table as he weighs his next move.
The winger’s future has come under closer attention after Egypt’s World Cup campaign ended with a last-16 defeat by Lionel Messi’s Argentina. He was impressive for his country at the tournament and showed he still has very much to offer.
Several MLS clubs have explored the possibility of signing Salah, but Sporting Kansas City is believed to be in the strongest position should he choose to move across the Atlantic.
The club’s interest comes during a period of increased investment under new majority owner Peter Mallouk, whose family has Egyptian roots. Sporting are seeking to reshape their squad after changes in ownership and leadership and are pursuing several high-profile additions before the transfer window closes.
The club are expected to engage in expensive deals to land marquee signings this summer. They could yet complete transfers that would rank among the largest in MLS history, according to sources.
Salah’s final campaign at Liverpool proved difficult by the standards he had set during his nine years at Anfield. He scored seven Premier League goals and registered seven assists after helping the club win the title the previous season with 29 goals and 18 assists.
Liverpool confirmed in March that Salah would leave at the end of his contract, bringing to a close one of the most successful spells in the club’s recent history. His final season also coincided with a deteriorating relationship with the then head coach, Arne Slot.
