Move came after a conversation with new manager Jose Mourinho who communicated that the France midfielder was central to his plans

Real Madrid have secured the future of Aurelien Tchouameni after agreeing a new contract with the midfielder that will keep him at the club until 2031.

The France international’s previous deal was due to run until 2028, but Madrid have moved to extend his stay after talks over his future during the summer. The 26-year-old joined the Spanish club from Monaco in 2022 in a deal worth €85m and has established himself as a regular in midfield.

Tchouameni’s future had been uncertain despite his importance to the team. Real Madrid’s hierarchy had considered allowing him to leave so that a sale could generate funds to strengthen other areas of the squad. Manchester United were the most likely destination.

However, after a conversation with the club’s new manager, Jose Mourinho, Tchouameni was told he was central to the Portuguese’s plans. That suited Tchouameni’s own desire to continue at the Bernabeu.

Questions over the midfielder’s position had followed a difficult campaign for Madrid, which ended with reports of a training-ground bust-up between Tchouameni and Federico Valverde that landed the latter in hospital. Both were fined a combined €1m.

On their part, Manchester United have recently agreed a deal to sign Chelsea’s Andrey Santos for £50m. The Brazilian will join alongside his compatriot Ederson, who will be arriving from Atalanta.
