Portugal and Spain renew their historic rivalry in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lamine Yamal set to headline a blockbuster clash for a place in the quarter-finals.
The FIFA World Cup Round of 16 serves up one of the tournament’s biggest fixtures as Iberian rivals Portugal and Spain lock horns at AT&T Stadium in Dallas on Monday.
With a place in the quarter-finals on the line, two of Europe’s strongest footballing nations will renew their long-standing rivalry in what promises to be a high-quality encounter.
Portugal booked their place in the knockout stages after finishing second in Group K behind Colombia.

Roberto Martinez’s men were held by both DR Congo and Colombia but produced a convincing 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan before battling back from a goal down to beat Croatia 2-1 in dramatic fashion in the Round of 32.
Cristiano Ronaldo equalised from the penalty spot before substitute Goncalo Ramos netted a stoppage-time winner to keep their World Cup dream alive.
Spain, meanwhile, moved through the group stage without losing a single game before producing another composed display to eliminate Switzerland in the Round of 32.
History suggests this tie could be extremely tight. Portugal have not lost to Spain in normal time at a major tournament since Euro 2012, while recent meetings, including the Nations League final in 2026 between the two sides have generally been low-scoring and fiercely contested.
Much of the spotlight will inevitably fall on Cristiano Ronaldo. He scored a hat-trick in his last outing vs Spain in the World Cup and although he’s not as fit as his former self, he will still be expected to produce a bit of magic.

The 41-year-old scored his first-ever World Cup knockout goal against Croatia and has now found the net three times in this tournament.
Ahead of the match, Ronaldo dismissed criticism of his performances, insisting he remains fully focused on helping Portugal progress rather than discussing his future beyond the competition.
Spain possess no shortage of attacking threats themselves. Lamine Yamal continues to shine on the biggest stage, while Nico Williams, Pedri and Oyarzabal provide pace, creativity and clinical finishing.
Portugal’s defence, marshalled by Ruben Dias, will need to remain disciplined against one of the tournament’s most dangerous attacking units.
