According to reports in Germany, former Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has emerged as the leading candidate to take charge of the four-time world champions.

Nagelsmann has come under intense scrutiny after Germany suffered a shock Round of 32 exit to Paraguay on penalties. The defeat marked another disappointing chapter in the country’s recent World Cup history and has intensified pressure on the German Football Association (DFB) to make a managerial change.

German reports state that Nagelsmann met with senior DFB officials at the federation’s headquarters in Frankfurt on Thursday. During the three-hour meeting, the 38-year-old was reportedly offered a severance package worth €7 million to bring his tenure to an early end.

Nagelsmann signed a contract extension in January 2025 that runs until 2028. While the DFB has never officially disclosed his salary, German media estimate that he earns around €7 million per year as national team manager.

Germany’s elimination against Paraguay represented their third consecutive disappointing World Cup campaign.

After group-stage exits in both the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, this year’s defeat came in their first knockout match at a World Cup since lifting the trophy in Brazil back in 2014.

In response to the latest setback, DFB president Bernd Neuendorf confirmed earlier this week that the federation had launched an immediate review into the team’s World Cup performance.

Reports suggest a final decision regarding Nagelsmann’s future is expected by the beginning of next week.

Should Germany decide to part ways with Nagelsmann, Klopp is widely viewed as the overwhelming favourite to succeed him.

Klopp has been away from frontline coaching since leaving Liverpool in 2024. He currently serves as Red Bull’s Head of Global Football, overseeing the company’s multi-club network across Europe, the Americas and Asia.

Despite his executive role, reports suggest he would be open to returning to management should the opportunity to lead Germany arise.
