Ajax are in advanced talks with Barcelona to sign goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen on loan.

The Dutch side submitted their opening proposal on Monday and discussions are expected to continue between the club’s sporting director Jordi Cruyff and Barcelona’s sporting director Deco.

It is believed that talks with centre around an agreement over the division of Ter Stegen’s salary.

The 34-year-old is open to another loan move away after joining Girona temporarily in January. He has fallen down the pecking order at Barcelona since early 2025 when he was permanently replaced by Wojciech Szczęsny. The arrival of Joan Garcia the following summer cemented his position and he has remained on the fringes ever since.

He has previously insisted on remaining at the club to fight for his place but that has been scuppered as much by injuries as by the strong form of Garcia. After being benched in a Copa del Rey game against second division side Guadalajara, Ter Stegen was ultimately convinced to seek a loan move for the second half of last season.

The goalkeeper is on huge wages which make him difficult to sell for Barcelona. Given Ajax’s financial position, any move would likely require Barcelona to still cover a significant portion of Ter Stegen’s wages.

Ter Stegen has spent the past 12 seasons at Barcelona after joining from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2014, making 423 appearances and winning 20 trophies, including seven La Liga titles and the Champions League.
