For years, one criticism followed Erling Haaland wherever he played.

Despite dominating club football with an extraordinary goalscoring record, Haaland had never experienced a FIFA World Cup because Norway repeatedly failed to qualify.

That narrative has finally changed in 2026.

Norway’s return to the World Cup has given Haaland the global stage many believed his talent deserved, and he has wasted absolutely no time reminding everyone why he is regarded as one of the deadliest strikers in football.

Goals have come almost effortlessly so far at the World Cup. The Manchester City striker opened his tournament with a brace before producing another double against Senegal, taking his tally to four goals during the group stage.

Every match has highlighted the qualities that have made him one of Europe’s most feared forwards—elite movement inside the penalty area, ruthless finishing and an uncanny ability to appear in exactly the right place at exactly the right time.

Against Senegal, Haaland once again demonstrated his remarkable efficiency. He scored twice, constantly occupied Senegal’s defenders and could easily have finished with four goals on another day.

His movement created problems throughout the contest, while his finishing ensured Norway secured qualification for the knockout stages with a game to spare.

What makes Haaland particularly dangerous is that defenders often know exactly what he wants to do but remain unable to stop him.

His timing, physical strength and explosive acceleration allow him to attack crosses, through balls and rebounds with devastating effectiveness. Very few strikers convert chances as consistently as the Norwegian captain.

His performances have naturally placed him among the favourites for the Golden Boot. With four goals already and Norway progressing into the knockout rounds, Haaland has every opportunity to add significantly to his tally.

There has often been debate over whether Haaland could replicate his remarkable club form in international football. This tournament is beginning to answer that question emphatically.

Surrounded by an improving Norwegian team featuring the creativity of Martin Ødegaard, Haaland is finally receiving the service required to showcase his extraordinary finishing ability.

The knockout rounds will present far greater challenges, but Haaland has already shown he belongs among the elite performers at this World Cup.
