Mauricio Pochettino has played down concerns following the United States’ dramatic 3-2 defeat to Turkey, insisting the result did not overshadow the team’s primary objective of finishing top of Group D.
Despite conceding a stoppage-time winner, the USA advanced to the Round of 32 as group winners and will now face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the knockout stage.

The American coach admitted he was surprised that much of the post-match discussion focused on the defeat rather than his team’s successful group-stage campaign. Pochettino praised his players, coaching staff and supporters for navigating what he described as a highly competitive group to secure first place.
“Our objective was to finish first, and we finished first,” Pochettino told reporters after the match. The Argentine stressed that qualification as group winners was always the priority, adding that he was proud of the team’s achievement despite the disappointing ending against an already-eliminated Turkey side.
Pochettino also suggested the circumstances surrounding the match had a major influence on the result. With the United States already assured of a place in the knockout rounds before kick-off, the manager opted to rotate his squad heavily after earlier victories over Paraguay and Australia.
