South Africa secured a historic place in the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time after defeating South Korea 1-0, with Tshepang Maseko’s second-half winner sealing qualification.

Just three minutes into the match, Lee Kang-In delivered a dangerous corner that found Kim Min-Jae, whose powerful header appeared destined for the net before Aubrey Modiba produced a crucial goal-line clearance.
The South Koreans continued to push forward in the early stages and nearly found the breakthrough moments later. Lee Kang-In once again found space inside the penalty area, taking a touch before firing narrowly wide of the right post as the Taegeuk Warriors looked the more dangerous side.
However, despite their bright start, South Korea struggled to maintain their usual intensity and attacking rhythm. South Africa gradually grew into the contest and began to ask questions of the Asian side’s defence as the first half progressed.
The best opportunity for Hugo Broos’ men before the break arrived on the half-hour mark. Thalente Mbata unleashed a fierce strike from long range that goalkeeper Kim Seung-Gyu could only parry into the path of Evidence Makgopa.
The striker reacted quickly, but his effort was gathered at the second attempt, while an offside flag would likely have ruled out any goal.
With neither side able to break the deadlock before half-time, the match remained finely balanced. South Korea threatened again shortly after the restart when Oh Hyeon-Gyu connected with a cross, but goalkeeper Ronwen Williams reacted well to collect the header before it could sneak into the bottom corner.
The defining moment arrived just after the hour mark when Tshepang Maseko seized his opportunity. The South African forward reacted quickly inside the penalty area and fired a snapshot that beat a partially unsighted Seung-Gyu at his near post, sending the Bafana Bafana supporters into wild celebrations.

South Korea desperately searched for an equaliser during the closing stages but lacked the creativity and cutting edge needed to break down a disciplined South African defence.
The final whistle confirmed a historic victory for South Africa, who advance to the Round of 32 for the first time in their World Cup history and will now face Canada in California, while South Korea’s qualification hopes hang by a thread.
