Twelve teams have already secured places in the World Cup round of 32, while seven have been eliminated. But several places are still up for grabs, so what does each team need?
There are 12 groups from A to L. The top two teams in each group qualify automatically and occupy 24 out of the 32 spots in the knockouts, while the third-placed teams will have to compete with each other in a mini-league. Eight of the highest-ranked teams in that mini-league will go through, while the remaining four will be eliminated.
How are teams ranked for third-place?
In preceding order, teams are ranked based on points, goal difference, goals scored, fair play, and Fifa ranking.
For fair play, a yellow card equals -1, red card for two cautions -3, straight red card -4, yellow then straight red -5.
Finishing in third place with four points will be enough to qualify except if something extraordinary happens.
Which teams have qualified?
Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, France, Germany, Mexico, Morocco, Norway, South Africa, Switzerland and USA have all secured places in the last 32.
Czechia, Haiti, Jordan, Panama, Qatar, Tunisia and Turkey have been eliminated.
Group A
Mexico became the first team to secure a knockout place and completed the group stage with a perfect record. Three wins from three matches ensured they finished top and they will now face a third-placed side in the last 32 at the Estadio Azteca.
South Africa claimed one of the biggest results of their tournament by defeating South Korea in their final group match. Victory secured second place and a last-32 meeting with Canada in Los Angeles.
South Korea’s defeat dropped them into third place on three points. Their fate now depends on results elsewhere and the ranking of third-placed teams. Three points may turn out to be enough.
Czechia finished bottom of the group and are eliminated.
Group B
Switzerland secured top spot with seven points and their reward is a tie against one of the qualifying third-placed teams.
Canada also progress after finishing second on four points. They will face South Africa in the last 32 after ending the group stage level on points with third-placed Bosnia but ahead on tiebreakers.
Bosnia finished third with four points and a goal difference of minus one. Four points means they will more than likely qualify for the last 32.
Qatar’s campaign is over after finishing bottom.
Group C
Brazil topped the group after their victory over Scotland and will meet the runners-up from Group F in the last 32.
Morocco also finished on seven points and progress comfortably in second place. They will meet the winners of Group F.
Scotland are all but eliminated after a heavy defeat to Brazil left them in third place with three points and a goal difference of minus three. Only extremely favourable – and unlikely – results elsewhere will keep them in the tournament.
Haiti were already eliminated before the final round.
Group D
USA have secured first place and can approach their final match against Turkey knowing qualification is already guaranteed.
Australia and Paraguay will battle for second place. Australia have the advantage and a draw will be enough for them to secure automatic qualification.
Paraguay must beat the Aussies to finish in the top two. However, a draw would leave them on four points, which means a very high chance of qualifying as a third-placed team.
Turkey have been eliminated since they can no longer finish third in their group. They lost to both Australia and Paraguay and head-to-head is a major tie-breaker, so even if they beat USA by an extraordinary number of goals they cannot leapfrog either of those teams.
Group E
Germany have already wrapped up first place and will face a third-placed team in the knockout rounds.
Ivory Coast need only a point in their next game against Curaçao to secure qualification. If they win, they are guaranteed to finish second.
Ecuador must beat Germany to guarantee at least a strong third-place position. But they could still finish second if they beat Germany and Curaçao take points from Ivory Coast.
Curaçao are also still in contention for the knockouts. Victory over Ivory Coast would guarantee they stay alive and could even take them to automatic qualification through second place, provided Ecuador do not beat Germany.
Group F
The Netherlands can secure qualification with either a win or a draw against Tunisia.
Japan also control their own destiny. Avoiding defeat against Sweden would guarantee a place in the last 32.
As for Sweden, victory over Japan would secure automatic qualification. A draw would leave them on four points and likely to qualify as a third-placed team.
Tunisia are already out after defeats in their first two matches.
Group G
Egypt start the final round at the top of the table and a draw against Iran will be enough to secure qualification. Even defeat may not be fatal if results elsewhere fall in their favour.
Iran will need to beat Egypt to guarantee progress, but they could also secure first place depending on Belgium’s result.
Belgium are on two points and need a win against New Zealand to guarantee qualification, but a draw could also be enough if Egypt defeat Iran.
New Zealand still have hopes of progressing, but they would need to beat Belgium. Victory would mean qualification as third-placed team, but they could still finish second if they win and Egypt beat Iran.
Group H
Spain need only avoid defeat against Uruguay to guarantee qualification.
Uruguay can qualify automatically if they beat Spain. If they draw, they could still finish second but that would depend on the result of Cape Verde v Saudi Arabia. If either of those teams win, they could be on their way out.
Cape Verde need to beat Saudi Arabia to go through. If they draw, they would have to have to depend on the third-place mini-league.
Saudi Arabia can still qualify but they need to beat Cape Verde. If they do and Spain beat Uruguay, they will finish second.
Group I
France and Norway have already secured qualification and their match is to determine who tops the group.
France have a superior goal difference, so a draw is enough for top spot, whereas Norway will need to win if they are to finish first.
Senegal and Iraq are almost on their way out with zero points and even if one of them defeats the other, the chances of that team qualifying via third place is very slim.
Group J
Argentina have secured first place and will face the runners-up from Group H in the last 32.
The battle for second is between Austria and Algeria. Austria need to draw to claim second place and progress automatically, while Algeria must win to leapfrog Austria.
Jordan have already been eliminated.
Group K
Colombia are already through and will secure first place if they avoid defeat against Portugal.
A draw would guarantee second place for Portugal, but even with defeat they are still likely to finish second due to superior goal difference.
If DR Congo beat Uzbekistan they will qualify. A draw would eliminate both teams, but even victory is unlikely to be enough for Uzbekistan to go through unless it is by a very high margin.
Group L
England and Ghana have all but qualified for the knockouts. England will secure first place if they beat Panama, while Ghana can finish second if they avoid defeat against Croatia. But even if they lose, they will likely still go through to the knockouts.
They can overtake England to win the group if they beat Croatia and England fail to beat Panama.
Croatia need victory to guarantee progress. A draw would leave them on four points and highly likely to qualify as third-placed team.
Panama have already been eliminated.
