Senegal coach Pape Thiaw has described his side’s crucial World Cup clash against Norway as a final, insisting the Lions of Teranga cannot afford another mistake after losing to France.

Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has described his team’s upcoming World Cup showdown with Norway as a must-win encounter, admitting that anything less than victory could leave the Lions of Teranga heading home early.

The West Africans began their Group I campaign with a disappointing 3-1 defeat to France, placing immediate pressure on their remaining fixtures.

Another loss against Norway at MetLife Stadium would eliminate Senegal from the tournament with one game still to play.

Speaking ahead of the crucial encounter, Thiaw stressed the magnitude of the occasion and revealed that his coaching staff have spent considerable time analyzing Norway’s strengths and weaknesses in preparation for the game.

“It’s an important match, a final for us,” Thiaw told reporters. “We know a negative result could cost us a place in the next round. Norway are a very good team, strong offensively and physically, but we’ve prepared for this challenge and we’re determined to get the win.”

The Senegal coach acknowledged that his side had put themselves in a difficult position after the defeat to France. However, he believes qualification remains within reach if his players respond positively and avoid repeating the mistakes that proved costly in their opening match.

“We knew we were in a tough group and every match would be like a final,” he said. “We made mistakes against France, but we still have two opportunities left. Now we can’t afford any more errors. The players are fit, motivated, and ready to make our people proud.”

Thiaw also revealed that the squad had thoroughly reviewed the France defeat in an effort to identify where things went wrong. The coaching staff have focused on correcting those issues ahead of what could be the defining match of Senegal’s tournament.

One of the biggest challenges awaiting Senegal will be stopping Norway’s prolific attack, led by Manchester City striker Erling Haaland.

The Scandinavian side opened their World Cup campaign with an impressive 4-1 victory over Iraq, with Haaland scoring twice to underline his status as one of the world’s most dangerous forwards.

Despite Haaland’s threat, Thiaw insisted Senegal would not build their entire game plan around one player. “There won’t be an anti-Haaland plan,” he explained. “There will be an anti-Norway plan. We respect Erling because he’s a world-class striker, but we also have defenders who have faced top-level forwards before. Our focus is on the entire Norwegian team because the most important thing is getting the points we need.”
