Turkey’s World Cup dream ended in heartbreak after a 1-0 defeat to Paraguay, with Arda Guler and company eliminated despite creating a record number of chances.

Turkey’s long-awaited return to the World Cup has ended in stunning disappointment after a 1-0 defeat to Paraguay confirmed their elimination from the tournament with a game to spare.

Arriving at their first World Cup in 24 years with high expectations and one of Europe’s most exciting young squads, the Turks leave without scoring a single goal, despite creating chance after chance in both of their group-stage matches.

The defeat was particularly painful because Turkey once again dominated the statistics without finding the back of the net.

After registering 30 unsuccessful attempts in their opening 2-0 loss to Australia, they fired another 32 shots against Paraguay. The combined total of 62 shots without scoring is the highest recorded over any two-match span at a World Cup since detailed data collection began in 1966.

While Turkey struggled to convert opportunities, Paraguay showed ruthless efficiency. Just over a minute into the match, Matias Galarza produced a moment of brilliance, firing home from 25 metres to score the fastest goal of the tournament so far.

That strike ultimately proved enough to keep Paraguay’s World Cup hopes alive and send Turkey crashing out.

The result was made even more frustrating for the European side by the fact that they played against 10 men for more than an entire half.

Paraguay were reduced to 10 players in first-half stoppage time when Miguel Almiron was shown a red card following an incident involving Mert Muldur. Yet even with the numerical advantage, Turkey could not find the breakthrough they desperately needed.

There were moments when it looked like their luck might finally change. Muldur came agonisingly close in the first half when his powerful header struck the crossbar before bouncing against the post and away from danger.

As the game wore on, players including Baris Yilmaz, Can Uzun and Merih Demiral all had opportunities, but none could provide the finishing touch.

The face of Turkey’s disappointment was Arda Guler, the 21-year-old star who has become the symbol of the country’s new football generation.

Speaking after the match, the Real Madrid midfielder struggled to hide his emotions and offered an apology to supporters who had believed this team could make a deep run in the tournament.

“We tried very hard but it didn’t work. We should have scored some goals and won these games,” Guler said. “Everybody’s sad, everybody’s crying.”
