Ismael Saibari’s stunning early strike earned Morocco a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Scotland, moving the Atlas Lions to the top of Group D at the 2026 World Cup.
Morocco strengthened their grip on Group D at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a narrow but deserved 1-0 victory over Scotland in Boston.
A moment of brilliance from Ismael Saibari proved to be the difference as the Atlas Lions extended their impressive unbeaten run and moved into a commanding position in the race for qualification.
The North Africans wasted little time making their mark on the contest. Just minutes into the match, Brahim Diaz slipped a clever pass into the path of Saibari, who appeared to have been forced into a difficult angle by the Scottish defence. However, the soon-to-be Bayern Munich forward unleashed a sensational strike that flew into the top corner, leaving Angus Gunn with no chance.

Buoyed by the early breakthrough, Morocco continued to push forward in search of a second goal. They almost doubled their advantage shortly afterwards when Ryan Christie was dispossessed in midfield, creating an opening for Azzedine Ounahi. His dangerous cross flashed across the face of goal but narrowly evaded two teammates arriving in the penalty area.
Scotland struggled to contain Morocco’s attacking movement, and Gunn was called into action again midway through the first half. Achraf Hakimi found space inside the box and directed an effort towards goal, but the Scottish goalkeeper reacted well to keep his side in the game.
The Atlas Lions remained firmly on top as Bilal El Khannouss was presented with a promising opportunity following a midfield collision. The Stuttgart midfielder looked set to score, but a cruel bobble caused him to lose control of his effort, sending the ball high over the crossbar.
Scotland’s best moment of the opening half came through captain Andy Robertson, who surged forward and picked out John McGinn on the opposite flank. However, the Aston Villa midfielder found himself at a tight angle and failed to properly connect with the ball, allowing Morocco to maintain their lead heading into the break.
The Scots emerged with greater urgency after halftime and looked determined to find an equaliser. They appealed for a penalty when McGinn went down under a challenge from Neil El Aynaoui, but the referee waved away the protests.
Morocco soon regained control, and Saibari nearly produced another spectacular moment when his deflected effort crashed against the crossbar and bounced to safety. El Khannouss also forced an excellent save from Gunn with a powerful header from a corner kick.
Despite enjoying more possession in the latter stages, Scotland rarely troubled Bono in the Moroccan goal and struggled to create clear-cut chances. Scott McTominay saw one effort blocked, while Chemsdine Talbi squandered a late opportunity to seal the result for Morocco.

The Atlas Lions comfortably held on for a crucial victory that sends them to the top of Group D. Morocco now turn their attention to Haiti, while Scotland face a daunting clash against Brazil knowing their qualification hopes could soon come under serious pressure.
