Czech Republic and South Africa played out a 1-1 World Cup draw, leaving both nations needing victory in their final Group A matches to keep knockout hopes alive.
The Czech Republic and South Africa shared the spoils in a hard-fought 1-1 draw at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a result that does little to help either side’s hopes of reaching the knockout rounds.

Czech Republic made the brighter start and looked determined to put their opening defeat behind them. Despite an early missed opportunity from Patrik Schick, the Europeans continued to push forward and were rewarded with the opening goal inside the first ten minutes.
A well-worked move saw Adam Hložek keep the ball alive near the byline before finding Alexandr Sojka. The midfielder showed great awareness to nudge the ball into the path of Michal Sadílek, who made no mistake as he fired past Ronwen Williams to give the Czechs an early advantage.
South Africa, missing two key players following red cards in their defeat to Mexico, struggled to cope with the Czech Republic’s intensity in the opening stages. Although Bafana Bafana gradually gained more possession as the half progressed, they found it difficult to create meaningful chances against a disciplined Czech defence.
The Europeans nearly doubled their lead shortly after the restart. Vladimir Darida tested the South African backline with a dangerous effort, while Schick also came close but was unable to beat Williams as South Africa continued to search for a way back into the contest.
With 20 minutes remaining, South Africa finally began to threaten. Evidence Makgopa forced a routine save from goalkeeper Matej Kovar, but the chance sparked a positive spell for the African side. Their persistence eventually paid off when they were awarded a penalty after Pavel Sulc was judged to have handled the ball inside the area.
Teboho Mokoena stepped up with confidence and powered his spot-kick into the bottom corner to level the scores. The midfielder had been trying his luck from distance throughout the match, and this time he found the accuracy needed to beat Kovar and bring South Africa back into the game.

Both teams searched for a late winner, but neither could find the quality required in the final third. Lukas Provod came closest for the Czech Republic, sending a shot narrowly wide, while South Africa lacked the cutting edge needed to complete the turnaround.
The draw leaves both nations facing a must-win scenario in their final group matches if they are to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
For South Africa, qualification for the knockout stage would be a historic first, while the Czech Republic are still searching for their first progression beyond the group stage since becoming an independent nation.
