Amad Diallo scored a dramatic late winner as Ivory Coast defeated Ecuador 1-0 in their World Cup opener, ending the South Americans’ 19-match unbeaten run.

Ivory Coast made a dream start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign by securing a dramatic 1-0 victory over Ecuador in Group E. Amad Diallo’s injury-time winner stunned the South Americans and brought an end to their impressive 19-match unbeaten run.

Fresh from an eye-catching friendly victory over France earlier this month, the Elephants entered the contest full of confidence and nearly grabbed an early breakthrough. Bazoumana Toure tested goalkeeper Hernan Galindez with a composed effort that forced the Ecuadorian shot-stopper into a smart low save.

The match quickly developed into an entertaining and open contest, with Ecuador creating several dangerous opportunities of their own. Sebastian Beccacece’s side twice struck the woodwork during the first half as they pushed for an opening goal.

John Yeboah came closest when he capitalised on a defensive mistake outside the penalty area and unleashed a powerful left-footed strike that crashed against the crossbar. Moments later, Alan Minda was sent through on goal by Pedro Vite, only to see his effort also rattle the woodwork.

Ivory Coast continued to threaten after the break and were unlucky not to take the lead themselves. Elye Wahi thought he had found the breakthrough when he met Yan Diomande’s pass with a first-time effort, but the crossbar once again proved decisive, denying the striker.

Ecuador gradually regained control and began creating chances of their own. Gonzalo Plata came close to breaking the deadlock with a powerful drive that forced Yahia Fofana into an excellent save, lifting the spirits of the large Ecuadorian crowd inside the stadium.

As the match entered its closing stages, Ecuador appeared set to claim a valuable point. However, the Ivorians produced one final moment of quality in stoppage time. Wilfried Singo surged forward from deep inside his own half before driving into the penalty area and delivering a perfectly weighted pass across goal.

Diallo was on hand to apply the finishing touch, calmly guiding the ball beyond Galindez to spark wild celebrations among the Ivory Coast players and supporters.

The victory gives the Elephants early momentum ahead of a daunting clash with Germany, while Ecuador must quickly recover and avoid another setback against World Cup newcomers Curaçao if they hope to reach the knockout stages.
