Club have a number of options which will need to be decided over the summer
Manchester United are assessing options to strengthen at left-back this summer, and Newcastle’s Lewis Hall and Fulham’s Antonee Robinson have emerged as potential targets.
The club are expected to enter the market for reinforcements following the departure of Tyrell Malacia, which has left Luke Shaw as the only recognised senior left-back in Michael Carrick’s squad.
Patrick Dorgu has thrived further forward and is provoking memories of a younger Gareth Bale, so he is not expected to return to left-back. Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui can provide cover, but both are right-backs, not left-backs and United would rather place round pegs in round holes as they try to compete against the best teams in the world.
Hall has been monitored by United for several months and remains a player of interest. The 21-year-old, who joined Newcastle from Chelsea in a deal worth £28m in 2024, is regarded as a long-term option as the club plans for the future with Shaw entering the final year of his contract.
Any move for Hall is likely to prove difficult, however. Newcastle are not under pressure to sell and would be expected to demand a substantial fee for one of the most highly rated young full-backs in English football.
Robinson has also been discussed internally as United weigh alternative targets. The USA international has established himself as one of Fulham’s most consistent performers and is expected to attract interest again this summer.
Fulham’s position on Robinson may become clearer when a new head coach arrives at Craven Cottage this summer, whose position could determine whether the defender will be made available during the transfer window.
United could also look within their own ranks. The 19-year-old Harry Amass is set to be involved with the first team during pre-season after recovering from the injury that curtailed his loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday.
The academy graduate impressed during the first half of last season, and the club are understood to be considering options for his development ahead of the new season.
