Mauricio Pochettino believes the United States’ 3-2 victory over Senegal can restore confidence among supporters ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Mauricio Pochettino believes the United States’ thrilling 3-2 victory over Senegal in an international friendly can help rebuild trust among supporters as preparations continue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With the tournament set to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the American coach sees the result as an important step in restoring confidence around the national team.

The USA heads into the World Cup with ambitions of making a deep run on home soil. Drawn alongside Paraguay, Australia, and Turkey in Group DGroup D, the Americans are expected to progress to the knockout stages, and anything less would be viewed as a major disappointment.

Recent defeats to Portugal and Belgium had raised concerns among fans, especially given the team’s historical struggles against elite opposition. However, the victory over Senegal, finalists at the Africa Cup of Nations, offered a timely reminder of the squad’s potential and provided a significant morale boost ahead of the tournament.

Speaking after the match, Pochettino stressed that the result was particularly important for the atmosphere surrounding the team. The Argentine acknowledged that supporters needed reassurance following recent setbacks and believes the performance demonstrated the commitment, attitude, and talent within the squad.

Mauricio Pochettino

The former Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain manager took charge of the United States in September 2024 during a difficult period.

Despite successes in previous years, including Gold Cup and Nations League triumphs, a series of disappointing tournament exits prompted a major overhaul that ultimately led to Pochettino’s appointment.

Since arriving, the Argentine has worked to refresh the squad by introducing emerging talents from Major League Soccer while increasing competition for places. His efforts have also extended to established stars, with even Christian Pulisic facing scrutiny after enduring a lengthy goal drought for both club and country.

Pulisic responded in impressive fashion against Senegal, contributing a goal and an assist before being substituted at halftime. Pochettino praised the AC Milan forward’s display and highlighted the hard work he has put in during training, expressing delight at seeing the American captain rediscover his scoring touch ahead of the World Cup.

There were further positives for the United States as Sergino Dest marked his return from injury with a goal, while striker Folarin Balogun came off the bench to add a third.
