Chelsea were booed off by their own fans at the Bridge at full time, and team captain Reece James admits his side underperformed

Chelsea captain Reece James has given a withering assessment of his side’s performance in the second leg of the Conference League quarter-final tie against Polish side Legia Warsaw.

Speaking after the game, the England right back admitted that the football the team played on the night was “frustrating to watch”, which caused serious fan annoyance.

Chelsea went into the second round of the tie with a three-goal advantage from a first leg match where they were poor in the first half but turned on an impressive display in the second. It was a similar story on Thursday night, except there was not enough bite in the attack to bring the goals, and there was an even more glaring lack of verve from a surprisingly strong Chelsea lineup.

After the game there were boos from the fans as the team walked off the pitch.

It was a poor performance,” said James, who played the full 90 minutes despite being an injury risk. “We had a 3-0 lead, maybe that played a part in taking our foot off the gas.

“Maybe we disrespected the competition today. If you don’t prepare right, you will pay. It’s going to affect the mindset. It’s going to be in the back of people’s heads.

“I understand the frustration. Fans come to see excitement. We were frustrating to watch.”
