Mathys Tel delivered a dangerous corner, and after Palhinha’s initial header struck the post, the Portuguese midfielder reacted quickest to force the rebound over the line at the second attempt.
Holding a rare half-time lead gave Spurs confidence, especially considering Everton’s poor defensive record away from home in recent weeks.
However, tension quickly returned when news filtered through that West Ham had taken the lead against Leeds United in their own survival battle.
