Egyptian voices affection for the club despite frosty end with Arne Slot
Mohamed Salah has said he will “always love” Liverpool as the forward prepares to leave Anfield this summer, bringing an end to a nine-year spell that established him as one of the club’s modern greats.
Salah will make his final appearance at Anfield against Brentford on Sunday after Liverpool and the Egypt international agreed to part ways despite a year remaining on his contract.
The departure follows a difficult final campaign for the 33-year-old, whose relationship with head coach Arne Slot came under scrutiny during the season.
Salah was briefly dropped in December after publicly claiming he had been “thrown under the bus” following Liverpool’s poor run of form, while he also acknowledged tensions with Slot.
Although he returned after the Africa Cup of Nations and remained involved for the rest of the campaign, suggestions of a reconciliation appeared temporary, with Liverpool ultimately opting for a summer separation.
Salah then drew attention after last week’s defeat at Aston Villa when he called for a return to the “heavy metal football” associated with Jurgen Klopp’s era. The post was liked by many Liverpool players past and present.
But Salah voiced only his affection for Liverpool in a documentary produced by the club. Salah: Farewell to the King reflects on his time at Liverpool, where he won the Champions League and two Premier League titles among other club and individual honours.
“The club means everything,” Salah said. “The people mean everything, the city means everything. I will always love this club. I will always support it.
“It means to me everything. You live in the club, you feel the love and appreciation from the fans.
“This is the most important thing, people appreciate what you have done and appreciate everything you’ve done for them and for yourself.”
