Tottenham’s Premier League survival battle will be decided on the final day after a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Tottenham Hotspur’s miserable season will now be decided on the Premier League’s final day after they suffered a damaging 2-1 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The loss leaves Spurs still fighting for survival, with Roberto De Zerbi’s side now under huge pressure heading into their final fixture against Everton.
The visitors almost handed Chelsea an early gift when Jorrel Hato played a careless backpass that completely wrong-footed Robert Sanchez. Fortunately for the Blues goalkeeper, the ball rolled narrowly wide of the post. Moments later, Tottenham nearly took the lead when Mathys Tel rose at the back post, only to see his header bounce back off the upright.
Chelsea gradually settled into the contest after those early scares and soon began to control possession. Cole Palmer tested Antonin Kinsky with a curling effort that had to be tipped around the post, but the Tottenham goalkeeper could do nothing to stop Enzo Fernandez shortly after.
The Chelsea captain produced a stunning strike from 25 yards, curling the ball perfectly into the bottom corner to give the hosts the lead. The goal also brought Fernandez into double figures for Premier League goals this season, capping another influential display from the Argentine midfielder.

With confidence growing, Chelsea pushed for a second before halftime. Liam Delap squandered a good opportunity from inside the area by blasting over, while Fernandez came close again with a fierce free-kick that rattled the crossbar from a tight angle. Tottenham offered little in response, with Tel wasting their best opening before the break.
Spurs showed more urgency after halftime, knowing their survival hopes were slipping away. Richarlison, who had been omitted from Brazil’s World Cup squad less than a day earlier, nearly equalized when he met Randal Kolo Muani’s cross with a header, but Sanchez reacted well to hold the effort.
Chelsea eventually doubled their advantage in the 67th minute through Andrey Santos. Pedro Neto floated a dangerous cross into the box, Fernandez cleverly nodded it back across goal, and Santos was left completely unmarked to calmly finish from close range.

Tottenham refused to give up and pulled one back seven minutes later. Substitute Pape Matar Sarr produced a clever backheel inside the area, allowing Richarlison to smash home from point-blank range and give the away side late hope. James Maddison later saw a dangerous effort blocked by Hato, while Micky van de Ven also had strong penalty appeals waved away after a challenge involving Marc Cucurella.
Maddison’s late free-kick sailed over the crossbar, confirming Chelsea’s first league victory in eight matches and lifting them back into the European qualification places. Tottenham, meanwhile, remain dangerously close to relegation and must avoid defeat against Everton on the final day, or rely on Leeds United taking points off West Ham, to preserve their Premier League status.
